A Celebration of Luminarias/Farolitos and Illuminated Bike Parade
Una celebración de farolitos/luminarias y Desfile de bicicletas illuminadas
This event was a partnership between Artful Life, the National Hispanic Cultural Center (NHCC), Storyriders (Dolores Gonzales, Valle Vista and Hawthorne Elementary Schools) and the City of Albuquerque--a one day celebration of the small paper bag lanterns with sand and candles that some call “farolitos ” and others call “luminarias”–a New Mexico tradition. Over 200 joined us in the Barelas neighborhood of Albuquerque for this very special day.

All events took place at the National Hispanic Cultural Center, 1701 4th St. SW, Albuquerque, NM 87102and were free and open to the public.

3-4 pm: Talk: Enrique Lamadrid, “Luminaria or Farolito? History/Legends/Myths of the Little Brown Bag with a Candle and Sand”.Free bicycle clinic with Esperanza.

4-7 pm: “Luminarte” workshop — make your own paper bag work of art with artist Sara Daniele Rivera. Pop Fizz open for dinner. Purchase t-shirts, bike lights and more in the NHCC Library.

4:30 pm: Start of the illuminated bicycle parade/desfile de bicicletas illuminadas, led by Storyriders students. The short ride is open to the public and will go along the Paseo del Bosque Trail. Arrive at 4 pm at the NW corner of the NHCC parking lot to start the ride at 4:30. Wear your “Team Farolito” or “Team Luminaria” t-shirt and adorn your helmet/bike/self with lights.

5:30 pm: Cyclists arrive at the NHCC plaza. Riders parade in a pattern of farolitos in front of the pyramid steps. Luminarias (bonfires) on the plaza. After the ride, cyclists can park their bikes with a free Esperanza bike valet in the Salon Ortega patio courtyard.

6 pm: Indoor events – free and open to the public.
--Youth art and writing on display.
--Refreshments
--Read luminaria/farolito stories with and to your children.

7 pm: Warm up with hot chocolate, warm cider, and biscochitos in the Salon Ortega. Community story-sharing — tell your stories about luminarias and farolitos. Meet and greet with young artists/writers.
